Hakeem Jeffries clarifies stance on Medicare for All

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries recently stated on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ that he does not currently support or cosponsor Medicare for All legislation. This marks a shift from his previous record; since entering Congress in 2013, Jeffries has cosponsored the Medicare for All Act in every Congress, including the 2019 and 2021 versions.

Economic projections regarding single-payer systems highlight significant fiscal challenges. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated that Medicare for All would require between $25 trillion and $35 trillion in federal financing over a 10-year period. Additionally, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that such plans could increase federal healthcare subsidies by $1.5 trillion to $3 trillion by the year 2030.

To fund a $30 trillion plan, analysts suggest it could necessitate a 32% payroll tax, a 25% income surtax, or a doubling of the national debt. Critics note that while advocates claim families would avoid premiums and deductibles, the costs would shift to the federal government via the IRS.
