HAL advances aerospace projects with Aravalli engine and TEJAS production

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines have signed a contract with SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd. to develop the ‘Aravalli’ engine. This new-generation high-power engine, falling in the 3,500 to 4,000 shp class, is intended to power HAL’s upcoming 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH).

In a separate development regarding India’s indigenous fighter programs, HAL has completed its original 40-aircraft order for the TEJAS MK-1, delivering the final two twin-seat trainers. The company is now shifting focus to the production of the advanced TEJAS MK-1A variant. However, the MK-1A program faces delays due to engine supply bottlenecks from GE Aerospace, with many airframes currently grounded while awaiting F404-IN20 engines. HAL has invoked contractual penalties against GE to address these delivery issues as the Indian Air Force aims to field its first MK-1A squadron by March 2027.
