Overview
India is advancing several indigenous aerospace and defense projects through international collaborations. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines have contracted with SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd. to develop the ‘Aravalli’ engine, a high-power engine designed for the upcoming 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant.
Simultaneously, HAL has finished its initial 40-aircraft order for the TEJAS MK-1, though the transition to the advanced TEJAS MK-1A variant has encountered delays due to engine supply issues from GE Aerospace.
In the unmanned aerial vehicle sector, Bharat Forge and Pratt & Whitney Canada are collaborating to integrate advanced turboprop engines into the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) UAV programme. This partnership focuses on engine compatibility and airframe integration to support long-endurance surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.
