Halk TV headquarters raided by Turkish police

Turkish police raided the Istanbul headquarters of Halk TV, a major pro-opposition news broadcaster, on October 14, 2026. The operation resulted in the suspension of live broadcasts and the appointment of a government-mandated trustee to manage the station.

The Istanbul Prosecutor's Office launched the intervention as part of a corruption investigation into the station's chairman, Cafer Mahiroğlu. Authorities have accused Mahiroğlu of financial crimes, including corruption, money laundering, and bid-rigging. Mahiroğlu, who resides in London, has denied all allegations, calling them baseless.

During the dawn raid, 11 individuals were detained, and arrest warrants were issued for 17 people. The takeover has drawn sharp criticism from opposition politicians and journalists, who argue the move is a political attempt to silence independent media. The timing of the raid coincided with the court defense of jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, a prominent political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Following the takeover, the newly appointed management placed Halk TV employees on administrative leave from October 16 through October 23, 2026. The station's social media presence has also faced restrictions.
