Turkish state control of media outlets

Overview

Over a two-year period, ten television stations in Turkey have been placed under state control via the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) following judicial investigations into financial crimes such as money laundering, fraud, and corruption.

Recent actions include a police raid on the Istanbul headquarters of the opposition broadcaster Halk TV on October 14, 2026. The Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office launched the intervention as part of a corruption investigation into the station’s chairman, Cafer Mahiroğlu, who has been accused of financial crimes including corruption, money laundering, and bid-rigging. Mahiroğlu, who resides in London, has denied all allegations, calling them ‘baseless.’

During the dawn raid, authorities detained 11 individuals and issued arrest warrants for 17 people. A government-appointed trustee has been placed in management of the station, and the new management placed Halk TV employees on administrative leave from October 16 through October 23, 2026. The station’s social media presence has also faced restrictions.

Other media outlets subject to mandatory management include Flash Haber, EkoTürk, Habertürk, Show TV, Bloomberg HT, HT Spor, TELE1, Kanal V, and GAİN Medya. While some stations continue to broadcast, others have changed programming or ceased operations entirely. Opposition figures and journalists have characterized these interventions as political attempts to silence independent media, noting that the Halk TV raid coincided with the court defense of jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
