Halkidiki tourism rises as European interest grows

Tourism in the Halkidiki region of Greece is experiencing a significant rise in interest from European travelers. Following a year that saw over one million foreign visitors, current seasonal data suggests numbers are remaining steady or increasing.

Despite recent wildfires in Siviri, the region has not seen a downturn in visitor numbers or a wave of hotel cancellations. While tourists are staying for fewer days on average compared to previous years, they are demonstrating a willingness to spend more per capita during their visits.

The demographic makeup of visitors is shifting due to geopolitical factors. The war in Ukraine and subsequent sanctions have led to a sharp decline in Russian tourists, who previously frequented the area alongside trips to Mount Athos. This market segment has largely shifted toward neighboring Turkey. However, the resulting gap has been filled by a combination of traditional visitors from Balkan nations—such as Serbia, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia—and a growing number of tourists from Western Europe, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy.
