Halloween spending projected to reach record $13.5 billion

Halloween spending in the United States is projected to reach a record $13.5 billion this year, according to data from the National Retail Federation. This surpasses the previous record of $13.1 billion.

Shoppers are increasingly starting their preparations earlier, with nearly half planning to buy items in September or earlier. Drivers for this early shopping include declining autumn temperatures and a desire for better budget management. Approximately 23 percent of early shoppers cited budget management, while 21 percent focused on seeking affordable pricing and promotions.

Artificial intelligence is playing a growing role in both supply chain management and consumer planning. Companies like Mars are utilizing AI to manage the complexities of the Halloween season, which serves as a stress test for supply chains. AI helps manufacturers and retailers like Walmart optimize inventory levels, balancing the need to meet early demand against the risk of overstocking and waste.

On the consumer side, 47 percent of shoppers are using AI tools to assist with their holiday preparations. The most common uses include brainstorming costume and decoration ideas and requesting product recommendations during the research phase.
