Halmahera, Indonesia experiences magnitude‑6.2 earthquake, no reported damage

A shallow earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck the island of Halmahera in eastern Indonesia on 3 July 2026. The quake was recorded at a depth of about 120–127 km, with its epicenter roughly 58 km west of the town of Tomelo, the capital of North Halmahera province. Both the United States Geological Survey and Germany’s GFZ confirmed the event, and Indonesia’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency (BMKV) said there is no tsunami threat.

Local reports indicated no injuries or material damage. One resident near Ternate described the shaking, saying, “I was sitting drinking coffee when my seat started shaking; I panicked for a moment because I still have trauma from earlier quakes.” Authorities continue to monitor the situation, but so far there are no confirmed casualties or damage.
