Halo 64 fan project ports multiplayer to Nintendo 64
A fan-led project titled ‘Halo 64’ has successfully ported the multiplayer suite of the original Xbox title, Halo: Combat Evolved, to the Nintendo 64 hardware. Developed by Jack Tulli, the port runs on the N64’s VR4300 processor using modern development frameworks including libdragon and tiny3d.
The project allows for local split-screen multiplayer for up to four players across all thirteen original multiplayer maps, such as Blood Gulch and Hang ’em High. It retains the original game’s physics, weapons, vehicles, and game modes, including Slayer, Capture the Flag, and Oddball. Additionally, a Firefight mode has been implemented, allowing players to face waves of enemies.
To play, users must provide their own assets by extracting data from an original Xbox disc image. The project is available on GitHub and can be played via an N64 emulator on a PC or on original Nintendo 64 hardware using a flashcart. The developer notes that the project is an unofficial fan creation and is not affiliated with Microsoft, Bungie, or Nintendo.
