Hamas delegation in Cairo seeks permanent Gaza ceasefire

A Hamas political bureau delegation led by Gaza envoy Halil al‑Hayye arrived in Cairo to meet mediators and complete cease‑fire negotiations. The team said the purpose is to make the truce permanent and move to the second phase of the agreement, including accelerating humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. A Hamas spokesperson quoted the delegation’s statement: “Hamas, Gazze Şeridi’ne yönelik insani yardımların artırılması, anlaşmanın ilk aşamasının uygulanmasının tamamlanması ve üzerinde mutabakata varılan Ulusal Gazze Yönetim Komitesi’nin göreve başlama sürecinin hızlandırılması gerektiğini vurgulamaktadır.” The delegation also emphasized that the formation of the UN‑backed National Gaza Management Committee, a technocratic interim government created under a UN Security Council resolution and a U.S. plan, should be sped up. The committee, which held its first meeting in Cairo on 15 January 2026, is intended to manage civil administration and security in Gaza until the Palestinian Authority completes its reform program. Israeli forces, however, continue daily strikes in Gaza despite the cease‑fire, hindering the committee’s ability to assume its duties.
