Hamas dissolves Gaza government, transfers power to UN‑backed technocratic committee

The Hamas movement announced that it has dissolved its governing body in the Gaza Strip and will hand authority to a technocratic committee backed by the United Nations as part of a U.S.–brokered cease‑fire agreement. Hamas officials said only technical and professional staff will remain to run day‑to‑day services, while the new committee, chaired by Gaza‑born engineer Ali Shaath and based in Cairo, is tasked with overseeing reconstruction and the administration of essential services.

The U.S.‑led Board of Peace, which supports the cease‑fire plan, said it will judge the move by “actions, not promises,” emphasizing that the committee must control all weapons in Gaza. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar dismissed the step as a tactic to avoid disarmament, noting that Hamas would still retain its arms.
