Hamas says Cairo ceasefire talks put pressure on Israel to honor Gaza truce

Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qasim announced that the movement and other Palestinian factions have responded positively and flexibly to the proposals presented by mediators from Egypt, Qatar and Turkey during recent talks in Cairo. According to Qasim, the parties reached "acceptable approaches" that were endorsed by all participants.

He called on the United Nations Security Council and its designated peace coordinator to exert direct pressure on Israel to halt ongoing violations of the cease‑fire that began in October, which he said have already resulted in about a thousand Palestinian deaths. Qasim stressed that the implementation of the U.S.‑backed Trump peace plan now depends on Israel complying with the first phase of the agreement and stopping further breaches.

Qasim concluded that the "ball is now in Israel's court," referencing the UN‑led Gaza peace council’s roadmap that calls for disarmament of armed groups only after Israeli forces withdraw. He urged the guarantor nations and mediators to push Israel to fully observe the cease‑fire and avoid adding new complications to the peace process.
