Hamas seeks election participation amid Gaza peace stalemate

Hamas is preparing to participate in upcoming Palestinian National Authority legislative elections, aiming to secure a decisive role in the Gaza Strip and influence the management of international reconstruction funds. Hussam Badran, a senior Hamas political bureau official, stated that the movement intends to join a broad coalition of Palestinian factions. This move comes without guarantees regarding the group's disarmament or the formal recognition of previous agreements.

While a ceasefire established in October 2025 has prevented large-scale warfare and facilitated the exchange of hostages and prisoners, the situation in Gaza remains in a state of stalemate. Although humanitarian aid has increased, the region is characterized by significant destruction and a lack of progress on a permanent peace roadmap. Despite a fifteen-point plan proposed by the Board of Peace to implement the second phase of an American-led roadmap, political deadlock persists between major actors.
