Hamas participation in Palestinian elections

Hamas has announced its intention to participate in the Palestinian legislative elections scheduled for November 28. Hussam Badran, a member of the Hamas political bureau, stated the organization intends to run as part of the “broadest possible national coalition” and has begun forming electoral committees.

Hamas has expressed opposition to certain conditions set by the Palestinian Authority, specifically rejecting the requirement that participating parties formally commit to Palestine Liberation Organization principles, such as the recognition of Israel. The group also expressed interest in presidential and National Council elections, while noting a willingness to hand over Gaza Strip administration to an agreed-upon technocratic committee.

This political move occurs amid a stalemate in Gaza. While an October 2025 ceasefire has prevented large-scale warfare and facilitated hostage and prisoner exchanges, the region remains characterized by significant destruction and political deadlock. Hamas seeks to secure a role in the elections to influence the management of international reconstruction funds, despite a lack of guarantees regarding disarmament or the recognition of previous agreements.
