Hamburg cuts 'Bettelampeln' lights to ease pedestrian and cyclist traffic

The number of so‑called “Bettelampeln” in Hamburg has fallen sharply. In April 2026 only 21 such traffic lights remained at intersections, down from 149 in 2011 – roughly 15 % of the original count. These lights require pedestrians or cyclists to press a button for a green signal while cars receive an automatic one. The city plans to replace the remaining Bettelampeln with fully automatic installations, reducing wait times and promoting equal treatment of all road users. Green party mobility spokesperson Rosa Domm said, “Bettelampeln are a relic of a time when foot and bike traffic was subordinate to cars, and they are finally disappearing.” The phased conversion will be incorporated into upcoming road works and signal upgrades.
