Hamburg gymnasium principals warn of budget cut consequences

Principals of Hamburg's gymnasiums have issued an open letter to Mayor Peter Tschentscher warning of the consequences of planned budget cuts for the 2027 and 2028 biennial budget. The Association of Hamburg Gymnasium Principals and Study Seminars argues that these schools are being disproportionately targeted for resource reductions.

The association criticizes the assumption that students at gymnasiums can withstand resource cuts due to their supposedly privileged social backgrounds. They warn that reducing the substitute reserve to just 99 percent of required staffing will lead to increased lesson cancellations and jeopardize overall school development.
