Hamburg Natural History Museum project at Elbtower faces uncertainty
Plans to house the Natural History Museum in Hamburg’s Elbtower are facing significant uncertainty. Dirk Kienscherf, chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, stated that the probability of the project being implemented is low.
Construction on the Elbtower has been halted since October 2023 following the insolvency of the Signa Group. While a consortium led by investor Dieter Becken has been negotiating with insolvency administrator Torsten Martini to purchase the partially completed structure, the city’s plan to acquire nearly half of the building for €595 million remains precarious. Kienscherf noted that while the city is open to discussing partial ownership to realize the museum, the current conditions offered to investors have not been adjusted, and the final decision rests with the parliament.
