Hamburg retail workers protest for 7% wage increase

Hundreds of employees in Hamburg’s retail sector demonstrated on July 3, calling for higher wages. The Verdi union organised a rally that drew about 300 participants, with an additional 200 workers protesting in front of retailers such as H&M, Rewe and Metro.

Verdi demands a uniform 7% pay rise, rejecting the employers’ current offers. Wage negotiations for the city’s roughly 150,000 retail and wholesale employees have been ongoing since April, with further talks scheduled for next Thursday and August 11.
