Verdi wage negotiations in Germany

Overview

In early July, Verdi organized a rally in Hamburg where retail employees demanded a uniform 7% wage increase. Around 500 workers took part, underscoring growing pressure on employers as negotiations that began in April were set to continue later in the month.

A few days later the union turned its attention to the maritime sector, entering collective-bargaining talks on behalf of roughly 11,000 port workers in northern German seaports. Verdi is seeking an 8.2% rise – at least €2.50 per hour – citing sector-specific expectations and earlier agreements that delivered smaller gains.

On 20 July Amazon announced a modest 3.1% wage rise for its German warehouse staff, raising the hourly rate for experienced workers to €18.87 and setting new-hire pay at €16.66. Verdi criticised the move, demanding legally binding tariff contracts and an end to the use of subcontracted delivery drivers, and continued to organise warning strikes despite their limited impact.

The following day Verdi reiterates its 8.2% demand for port workers, while the Central Association of German Seaports (ZDS) points to last year’s 3.1% increase and one-off bonuses, expressing confidence in constructive negotiations but acknowledging that this round could be more difficult.

By mid-August, negotiations for seaport employees reached an impasse. Verdi rejected a ZDS proposal that offered a 5.1% increase in basic hourly wages over 19 months, alongside a €300 increase in holiday pay for 2027 and a €460 annual allowance for container terminal workers. The union maintains its demand for an 8.2% increase over a one-year contract, with negotiator Sylvi Krisch threatening warning strikes if employers do not provide a better signal.
