Hamburg S-Bahn service suspended between Sternschanze and Altona

From 17 July to 30 August 2026, the S‑Bahn line between Sternschanze and Altona in Hamburg will be closed for extensive construction work. Lines S2, S5 and S7 (and temporarily S1) are affected, and passengers must use replacement bus services that may add up to 20 minutes to travel times.

The closure supports several parallel projects: replacement of the historic Sternbrücke, refurbishment of railway bridges on Holsten‑ and Schanzenstraße, and work on the new Altona station, including signalling, overhead lines and signal boxes. During the shutdown, S2 will terminate at the Hauptbahnhof and run via Dammtor to Sternschanze, while S5 will be rerouted through Jungfernstieg to Elbgaustraße. The S3 continues to operate without changes.
