Hamburg's Ernst‑Deutsch Theatre stages 'Timmy – Hope Dies Last
The Ernst‑Deutsch Theatre in Hamburg premiered the three‑part production "Timmy – die Hope stirbt zuletzt" on Saturday. TV actor Enrique Fiß and director Alexander Klessinger transformed the spring‑time saga of the stranded humpback whale Timmy, which captivated millions, into a mixed performance of theatre, concert and public self‑reflection. The piece presents the whale’s story as a modern Passion play and probes the social‑media fury that divided those who wanted the animal saved from those who let it die.
After the show, veterinarian Kirsten Tönnies, who participated in the rescue attempt, joined animal‑rights activists Anna Schubert and Hendrik Haßel for a public discussion. The evening concluded with Berlin band Tulpe performing their provocatively titled song "Sprengt den Wal". The creators summed up the narrative with the line: "Am Ende hassen sich alle gegenseitig, dabei war es das Ziel, etwas Positives zu bewirken."
