Hamburg theater stages ‘Timmy’ whale drama amid rescue controversy

A humpback whale, dubbed “Timmy” (later also called “Hartwin”), was repeatedly sighted off Germany and Denmark in early 2026. After several strandings, a private rescue effort freed the animal into the North Sea, but the whale later died and was found dead near the Danish island of Anholt in May.

Marine biologist and influencer Robert Marc Lehmann publicly criticized the rescue operation and accused German experts of incompetence. The high‑profile incident sparked widespread public empathy and debate over wildlife intervention.

The saga was transformed into a theatrical production titled “TIMMY – Die Hope stirbt zuletzt” (also promoted as “Passion Timmy”). Directed by Alexander Klessinger and starring actor Enrique Fiß, the play opened at Hamburg’s Ernst Deutsch Theater on 11 July 2026. The performance blends drama, a panel discussion with a veterinarian and activists, and a concert, presenting the whale as a quasi‑religious figure and examining the media, political and social reactions to the incident. Organisers warned some audience members might leave early due to the provocative format.
