Han Dong-hoon targets Democratic Party symbol in Roh Moo-hyun controversy
Professor Jin Jung-kwon has analyzed the recent political confrontation between independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon and the Democratic Party regarding allegations surrounding the late former President Roh Moo-hyun. Jin suggests that Han’s decision to raise issues related to the former president’s investigations is a strategic move targeting a core political symbol used by the Democratic Party to maintain its base.
The controversy involves allegations concerning funds used for an apartment in the United States by the former president’s daughter and her husband, as well as claims regarding gifts received from former Taekwang Industrial chairman Park Yeon-cha. Jin noted that while the former president himself cannot be prosecuted, the investigation into the source of these funds could reveal potential bribery or quid pro quo issues.
Jin observed that the Democratic Party’s reaction, labeling Han’s comments as an insult to the deceased, indicates an inability to provide a logical rebuttal. He argued that this exchange has increased Han’s political standing and shaken the current political landscape. However, Jin cautioned that Han must be careful not to alienate moderate voters who hold sentimental memories of Roh Moo-hyun.
