South Korean political dispute over Roh Moo-hyun allegations
Overview
A political dispute has emerged in South Korea involving independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon regarding bribery allegations connected to the late former President Roh Moo-hyun and businessman Park Yeon-cha.
Initially, Han clashed with Democratic Party lawmaker Kwak Sang-eon, who is Roh’s son-in-law. Han asserted that 2009 investigations into Roh’s family receiving luxury goods and funds were “fact” and questioned if such funds were used to purchase Kwak’s family apartment in the United States. Kwak demanded concrete evidence and rejected claims that the original investigations were merely political manipulation.
The conflict expanded to include broadcaster Kim Eo-jun, who accused Han of using the former president as a “political tool” to provoke progressives. Han responded by calling Kim’s remarks “arrogant” and accusing the Democratic Party of maintaining a “false myth” around Roh to shield him from scrutiny and justify the abolition of the prosecution system.
Professor Jin Jung-kwon has since analyzed the confrontation, suggesting Han’s decision to revisit these investigations is a strategic move targeting a core political symbol used by the Democratic Party to maintain its base. Jin noted that while the former president cannot be prosecuted, investigating the source of funds—specifically regarding the U.S. apartment and gifts from former Taekwang Industrial chairman Park Yeon-cha—could reveal bribery or quid pro quo issues. Jin observed that the Democratic Party’s reaction, labeling Han’s comments as an insult to the deceased, indicates an inability to provide a logical rebuttal. While this exchange may increase Han’s political standing, Jin cautioned that he must avoid alienating moderate voters who hold sentimental memories of Roh.
