Hand-foot-and-mouth disease rising among children in Turkey

Dr. Sanem Akay, a pediatric specialist at Ankara Etlik City Hospital, has highlighted a recent increase in hand-foot-and-mouth disease among preschool and school-aged children. Caused by enteroviruses, specifically the Coxsackie virus, the illness is characterized by fever, painful mouth sores, and rashes on the hands, feet, and other body parts.

Due to its high transmissibility in communal settings like schools and nurseries, Dr. Akay emphasizes that hand hygiene is the most effective method of prevention. The virus can spread through saliva, nasal secretions, rash fluid, and feces, as well as via contaminated surfaces such as toys, doorknobs, and tables.

Medical experts warn that hygiene practices must continue even after symptoms subside, as enteroviruses can continue to be shed in feces for a period after recovery. Proper handwashing after toilet use or diaper changes is critical to breaking the chain of infection.
