Haneda Airport unveils Terminal 1 North Satellite expansion

Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd. has unveiled the new North Satellite facility at Haneda Airport's Terminal 1, which is scheduled to begin operations on September 1, 2026. This marks the first major expansion of Terminal 1 since its opening in 1993.

The facility features a unique steel-and-wood hybrid structure, utilizing approximately 1,800 square meters of domestic timber, including larch and cedar. It has achieved the ‘ZEB Oriented’ certification for high energy efficiency, with solar power expected to cover about 80% of the facility's electricity needs. To assist passengers with the walk—which can take up to 15-16 minutes from security checkpoints—the terminal will implement autonomous mobility services such as ‘iino’ and ‘WHILL’.

The expansion includes six new boarding gates, which will reduce the need for bus transfers to remote parking stands. The facility will initially serve certain flights for Japan Airlines and Skymark Airlines. Additionally, due to the increased walking distances, airport authorities will strictly enforce a 30-minute pre-departure deadline for checking baggage for all domestic flights starting next month.
