Haneda Airport Terminal 1 expansion

Haneda Airport has completed the first major expansion of Terminal 1 since its 1993 opening with the launch of the North Side Satellite facility.

Announced prior to its opening, the facility was designed as a steel-and-wood hybrid structure utilizing approximately 1,800 square meters of domestic timber. The expansion aims for high energy efficiency, with solar power expected to provide roughly 80% of the facility's electricity. To manage the significant walking distances between security checkpoints and the new gates—which can reach up to 15 or 16 minutes—the airport planned to implement autonomous mobility services.

Upon its official commencement of operations on September 1, 2026, the satellite facility began serving gates 24 through 29. Gate 29 features a nearly 100-meter U-shaped passenger boarding bridge, noted as the longest in Japan. The facility is being utilized by Japan Airlines and Skymark Airlines. To maintain punctuality amidst the increased walking distances, domestic airlines at the airport have implemented a stricter 30-minute pre-departure deadline for baggage check-in.
