China deploys autonomous robots for traffic enforcement

China has begun deploying autonomous robots to assist with routine traffic enforcement in cities such as Changzhou and Hangzhou. Developed by SUPCON Information, the T2 model stands approximately 1.9 meters tall and weighs 98 kilograms.

Equipped with cameras, radar, and onboard computers, these robots can detect various traffic violations, including riders without helmets, vehicles carrying too many passengers, and pedestrians crossing against red lights. While they lack the authority to make arrests or carry weapons, they can mimic traffic police gestures and issue warnings. They also provide assistance with directions, parking information, and emergency connections to local police.

Since their deployment in May, 15 robots have reportedly issued over 170,000 warnings. SUPCON claims this has contributed to a reduction of more than 40 percent in monthly violations related to helmet use and illegal stopping at intersections, though these figures have not been independently verified.
