Hanifaru Bay manta rays gather in the Maldives

Hanifaru Bay in the Baa Atoll of the Maldives hosts a unique natural phenomenon where up to 100 manta rays gather in a concentrated area. During the summer months and into early autumn, the southwest monsoon drives massive amounts of plankton into the lagoon, creating a nutrient-rich environment that attracts the large rays.

Marine biologist Nairika Bharucha, from the Milaidhoo resort, notes that no other lagoon in the world contains such a high density of plankton. The bay, which is roughly the size of a football field and about 20 meters deep, allows the rays to feed in close proximity, creating a spectacular display of movement and activity.
