Manta ray activity and conservation in the Maldives
Overview
In Hanifaru Bay, located in the Baa Atoll of the Maldives, a natural phenomenon occurs where up to 100 manta rays gather in a concentrated area. This is driven by the southwest monsoon, which pushes massive amounts of plankton into the lagoon, creating a nutrient-rich environment. Marine biologist Nairika Bharucha has noted that no other lagoon in the world contains such a high density of plankton.
Building on this natural attraction, Maldivian resorts are integrating marine conservation into their seasonal offerings. For example, the Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives is observing its third annual ‘Manta Month’ in September to focus on manta ray encounters and marine education. These efforts align with research indicating the significant economic impact of manta ray tourism, which was estimated to have generated approximately US$227.3 million in 2021, contributing to the national GDP.
