Hanoi advances Red River corridor plan, tightens waterway traffic control

Hanoi’s 100‑year master plan designates the Red River as a central ecological and cultural axis, proposing an 11,000‑hectare, 80‑km corridor that will host parks, cultural spaces, bridges and unified river‑bank management. Experts say the project will shift the city’s orientation from “turning its back on the river” to “facing the river,” integrating the capital with the surrounding Red River Delta and national economic corridors.

At the same time, city authorities have stepped up waterway traffic monitoring as eight major bridges are being built across the Red River. Construction of piers and foundations narrows the navigable channel, leaving only a single central lane for vessels. The Hanoi Waterway Police are conducting regular patrols and enforcing safety regulations to prevent accidents during the rainy season and ensure the bridge projects stay on schedule.
