Hanoi pushes ahead with Beltway 1, bridge upgrades and Beltway 5 plans

The Hanoi People's Committee is accelerating work on the Beltway 1 segment between Hoàng Cầu and Voi Phục. The 2.27 km stretch, costing over VND 7.2 trillion, is more than 40 % complete as of June 2026 and is slated to open before 2 September, with the entire project targeted for completion in 2026. Coordination with Metro line 5 and dedicated waste‑transport lanes are intended to speed construction.

City officials also reviewed progress on nine major river‑crossing bridges over the Red River and Đuống River. Land‑acquisition is finished for several projects (e.g., Tứ Liên bridge at 100 %); other works face delays due to dike‑safety regulations. The goal is to have the bridges operational before the APEC summit in 2027.

A new decree requires communes to identify houses situated within the protected zones of fourth‑ and fifth‑class dikes and to complete relocations by 31 December 2030, with a 5‑metre buffer zone on both river and land sides.

The Ministry of Construction is evaluating the feasibility of Beltway 5 – a 321 km outer ring around the capital region. The project is estimated at VND 236 trillion, with about VND 64 trillion earmarked for compensation and resettlement. Plans call for a 6‑lane main carriageway, possible PPP or state‑funded financing, and a phased rollout beginning in 2027 and aiming for completion in 2030.
