Hanoi cools after extreme heat as heavy rain hits June 8‑9, 2026

After a heatwave that pushed apparent temperatures in Hanoi to 44‑45 °C, a cold front moved south on the night of 8 June 2026, bringing strong thunderstorms and heavy rain to the capital and the wider northern region. The rain began around sunset on 8 June, with localized downpours reaching very heavy intensity, and continued into the early hours of 9 June. Temperatures fell sharply, with the apparent temperature in Hanoi dropping about 15 °C by the next day and remaining comfortably cool for roughly three days (9‑11 June). Weather authorities warned of dangerous conditions, including strong gusts, hail, lightning and the possibility of flash flooding, landslides and localized flooding in low‑lying urban and industrial areas.

The same cold air mass affected the broader north, producing 80‑250 mm of rain in parts of the northwest, 50‑150 mm in central‑north provinces and 20‑100 mm in the Red River Delta, with isolated peaks over 250 mm. Meteorologists noted that cold spells in June are not unprecedented, having occurred on average 0.5 times per year since 1979, but their frequency has declined noticeably in recent decades, reflecting broader climate warming trends.
