Vietnam weather: Tropical depression and extreme rainfall
Overview
The tropical depression moving toward the coast between Ha Tinh and Hue has intensified weather risks across Vietnam. By September 11, the system maintained maximum sustained winds of level 6 with gusts reaching level 8. In Quang Tri, rainfall in some areas exceeded 480mm, leading to the relocation of 59 households in Lao Bao commune. Fast-flowing floodwaters on the O Lau River also swept away two barges belonging to the QT Nguyen Hoang Construction Materials Exploitation Company, leaving them stuck at the My Chanh railway bridge.
As of September 13, the depression has weakened into a low-pressure area over western Quang Tri and is expected to move toward central Laos. However, its circulation and the intertropical convergence zone continue to trigger widespread heavy rainfall. Forecasts indicate intense precipitation through September 16, with some regions expected to receive over 500mm of rain.
In Northern Vietnam, including Hanoi, significant rainfall is anticipated alongside a temperature drop of 3-4 degrees Celsius. In Central Vietnam, from Thanh Hoa to Hue, heavy rain maintains a high risk of flash floods and landslides, with rivers potentially rising to alarm levels BĐ1 through BĐ3. Authorities have issued warnings regarding potential lightning, hail, and strong wind gusts.
