Vietnam weather causes flooding in Hanoi and landslides in Phu Tho

Heavy rainfall across Vietnam has caused significant infrastructure challenges, including urban flooding in Hanoi and landslides in Phu Tho.

In Hanoi, intense thunderstorms on August 27 led to localized flooding in multiple districts, with rainfall reaching up to 136mm in Tay Mo. The city's Technical Infrastructure Management Center activated emergency response measures, operating numerous pumping stations and regulating reservoir levels to clear eight major flooding points by the following morning. Long-term flood mitigation efforts, including the completion of underground pipe systems and the implementation of urgent drainage projects, have shown early signs of improving water discharge capacity in high-pressure areas.

In Phu Tho province, heavy rains caused a landslide at Km2+490 on a branch of Provincial Road 448 in Ky Son ward. The landslide has compromised approximately half of the road surface and created cracks up to 10cm wide, posing risks of further ground instability. Authorities have banned all vehicles from passing the specific landslide site and implemented traffic diversion routes via Provincial Road 448 and National Highway 6 to ensure public safety.
