Hanoi initiates Red River landscape and flow restoration projects
Hanoi has approved an investment project to restore the flow and landscape of a 13.7km section of the Red River in O Dien commune. The project, valued at 1,881 billion VND, is scheduled for implementation between 2026 and 2029. It aims to improve drainage capacity, reduce flooding risks, and create green spaces through the construction of two canal branches and the upgrading of 45 auxiliary structures, including regulating sluices and bridges.
Parallel to this specific project, Hanoi is conducting research for a larger-scale urban planning initiative covering approximately 40km of the Red River's banks. Spanning over 11,400 hectares, this master plan seeks to develop a landscape boulevard integrating urban spaces, parks, and ecological zones. The planning approach utilizes different terrain elevations to determine land use, prioritizing ecological restoration and slow traffic in lower areas, while focusing on urban reconstruction and traditional village preservation in higher zones.
