Hanoi outskirts face flooding and severe traffic congestion

Heavy rainfall and rising river levels have caused significant flooding and traffic disruptions in the outskirts of Hanoi. In the Chương Mỹ district, National Highway 6 experienced severe congestion lasting several kilometers as vehicles were forced to move slowly or divert due to safety restrictions on several bridges, including Đại Thành, 72, and Tân Phú, following the rise of the Day River.

In Trần Phú Commune, flooding from the Bui River has persisted for five days, leaving many roads submerged under water depths of up to 2 meters. The inundation has forced residents to use boats as their primary mode of transportation, creating makeshift “boat docks” at the edges of flooded residential areas. Local authorities report that approximately 298 households, totaling 1,230 people, have been affected, with 145 households relocated to safer areas. While children and the elderly have been evacuated, many residents remain to guard property, navigating the flooded landscape by boat to access food and essential supplies.
