Hoan Kiem Lake urban planning proposal seeks to expand public space
Hanoi authorities are seeking community feedback on local adjustments to the urban subdivision planning for the Hoan Kiem Lake area and its surroundings. The proposal aims to align with the capital's 100-year master plan by expanding public spaces, increasing greenery, and modernizing transportation while preserving the area's historical and cultural identity.
The proposed plan covers approximately 32.51 hectares within the Hoan Kiem and Cua Nam wards. Key objectives include enhancing pedestrian zones, squares, and cultural spaces to improve accessibility to the lake. Specific proposals include expanding Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square and Cau Go Street, as well as connecting the area to the Red River ecological landscape.
Architectural experts have expressed both support and concern regarding the plan. While the intention to expand public space in all four directions is welcomed, some professionals have raised concerns about the potential demolition of existing structures, such as the Children's Palace, and whether the 66-hectare plan sufficiently integrates long-term preservation with modern development.
