Hanoi reviews Red River infrastructure after major floods

Hanoi authorities are reviewing transportation infrastructure along a 126km stretch of the Red River following the most significant flood in over 50 years. The September 2024 flood event, which saw water levels reach +11.30m in Hanoi and +13.51m in Son Tay, inundated approximately 67.9% of the riverbank area.

The Infrastructure Maintenance Board has submitted research results to the Hanoi Department of Construction to evaluate the safety and stability of the river axis. The study divides the area into three zones based on urbanization levels, planning orientations, and hydrological characteristics. This research aims to identify vulnerable areas, determine appropriate route directions, and establish design elevations to ensure connectivity and flood protection.

The project, funded by the city budget with an investment exceeding 16.7 billion VND, seeks to address current inadequacies in local road networks, which are often disconnected and prone to flooding due to low elevations. The resulting database on topography and hydrology will serve as a scientific foundation for sustainable urban space management and economic development along the river.
