Hanoi reviews urban planning proposals for Hoan Kiem Lake area

Hanoi is currently seeking public feedback on a planning proposal for the Hoan Kiem Lake area and its surroundings. The project aims to concretize the 100-year vision for the capital by adjusting local urban subdivision plans.

Architect Tran Tuan, from the Hanoi Urban Space and Water-related Research Group, has raised concerns regarding the preservation of local cultural identity. He suggested that the plan should avoid adding foreign or alien symbols, such as a proposed Triumphal Arch, which he argues may conflict with the area's cultural essence. Tuan recommends reducing festival infrastructure density around the lake to preserve its historical depth and silence, suggesting that large-scale events be shifted toward the Red River landscape axis.

Nguyen Ba Nguyen, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Construction, clarified that the architectural images currently in the planning documents are intended only as illustrations of the planning direction and are not final architectural designs. The plan focuses on preserving and reconstructing the historical inner city to enhance landscape quality, promote cultural heritage, and provide high-quality tourism utilities. Proposed improvements include connecting the lake to various public squares and increasing green spaces and water surfaces to enhance the central landscape.
