Hanoi speeds up construction of two major flood‑control lakes

The Hanoi People's Committee is fast‑tracking two large flood‑control lake projects to strengthen the capital’s drainage system ahead of the 2026 rainy season. In Long Biên district, a 20.5‑hectare park and water‑storage complex – including a 13.82‑hectare lake – is being built at an estimated cost of VND 276.4 billion, with construction started in Q1 2025 and expected to finish by Q4 2026.

In the western part of the city, the Phú Đô lake project in Từ Liêm district covers more than 36 hectares and will be able to regulate nearly 930 000 m³ of water. The site is already taking shape, with embankments, drainage pipes and other infrastructure installed to meet the urgent deadline before the upcoming monsoon. Both lakes are intended to reduce chronic urban flooding, connect to existing canals, and provide new green and recreational spaces for residents.
