Vietnam 2026: Growth, trade, infrastructure and new model
Entities: President Tô Lâm · Vietnam · Hanoi municipal People's Committee · Hoa Lac High‑Tech Park · Foreign investors
Overview
Vietnam’s economy continued its rapid expansion through mid‑2026, posting a 8.39 % Q2 GDP gain and targeting 11.9 % growth for the second half. Total import‑export turnover reached almost $550 billion in the first six months – a 27.1 % year‑on‑year rise – and logistics costs are expected to fall as a new development plan drives efficiency.
In Ho Chi Minh City, authorities accelerated a $30 trn (≈$1.3 bn) administrative complex in Thủ Thiêm, set to open in 2028, and approved 37 real‑estate projects delivering 21,165 new homes. An infrastructure package worth about $9.5 bn is under way, adding a third ring road, highway extensions, new bridges and three metro lines to improve connectivity to Long Thành airport and seaports.
Vietnam emerged as the leading Southeast Asian recipient of redirected Chinese out‑flow FDI, registering $34.65 bn of new capital in H1 2026 – a 61 % jump year‑on‑year – and realizing $13.03 bn. The “China + 1” shift, driven by trade tensions and supply‑chain concerns, is attracting investments in electronics, semiconductors, AI and data‑centre projects.
At the 14th National Party Congress, the leadership approved a new growth model that pivots from low‑cost labour to productivity, science‑technology and high‑value human capital, aiming for high‑income status by 2045. President Tô Lâm emphasized knowledge‑based growth, digital transformation and upgraded infrastructure as pillars for the next 100‑year vision.
