Hanura Party calls for stronger election oversight

Patrice Rio Capella, Vice Chairman of the Hanura Party, has called for strengthened oversight of election organizers following a lawsuit filed in the Constitutional Court regarding Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s diploma.

Capella noted that errors by the General Elections Commission (KPU) can trigger public unrest and legal challenges. He argued that the Election Organizer Ethics Council (DKPP) should have expanded powers beyond issuing warnings or dismissals. Specifically, he proposed that the DKPP should be able to refer suspected criminal violations or instances of gratification directly to law enforcement agencies.

Furthermore, Capella urged that the ongoing drafting of the Election Bill (RUU Pemilu) should prioritize institutional strengthening of election organizers rather than focusing solely on the parliamentary threshold and election systems. He emphasized that the professionalism of organizers is fundamental to the quality of democracy.
