Hanura Party advocacy for Indonesian election reform

The Hanura Party has advocated for legislative and institutional reforms regarding Indonesia’s election processes.

Initially, the party urged the House of Representatives and the government to finalize the Election Bill (RUU Pemilu) before the end of 2026. Patrice Rio Capella, Chairman of the Hanura DPP Task Force, argued that early finalization would allow political parties and activists time to study regulations and pursue legal recourse, such as judicial reviews, if necessary. The party also noted that early completion is vital for selecting commissioners for the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu).

Following a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court concerning Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s diploma, the party shifted focus toward strengthening election oversight. Capella, acting as Vice Chairman, proposed expanding the powers of the Election Organizer Ethics Council (DKPP) to allow it to refer suspected criminal violations or gratification directly to law enforcement. He emphasized that the drafting of the Election Bill should prioritize the professionalism and institutional strength of election organizers to ensure democratic quality.
