Hanwha Defense USA selected for U.S. Army artillery program
The U.S. Army has selected Hanwha Defense USA to develop prototypes for its Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) program. The initiative aims to modernize artillery by providing a wheeled 155mm system to potentially replace the M777 towed howitzers in certain military formations.
The agreement involves the delivery of six initial prototypes, with an option for an additional 12 units. The contract has an initial value of $100.3 million, with a potential cumulative value reaching $262.9 million. These prototypes will undergo operational testing and soldier trials over the next four years to assess reliability, performance, and supportability under combat conditions.
The K9 Mobile Howitzer is a wheeled variant derived from Hanwha’s tracked K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer. Unlike the standard tracked version, the K9MH utilizes an 8x8 Tatra Force chassis. The K9 family is already utilized by several nations, including South Korea, Poland, Norway, Australia, and India.
