U.S. Army K9 Mobile Howitzer prototype program

Overview

Hanwha Defense USA has been selected by the U.S. Army to provide prototype K9 Mobile Howitzers (K9MH) for the Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) program. This initiative seeks to modernize long-range precision fires by introducing a highly mobile, protected 155mm wheeled artillery system to potentially supplement or replace the M777 towed howitzer.

The contract involves the delivery of six prototype units, with an option for 12 additional systems, valued between $100.3 million and $262.9 million. These prototypes utilize an 8x8 wheeled chassis and a fully automated turret designed for rapid “shoot and scoot” maneuvers. To support the program, Hanwha has leased a facility in Opelika, Alabama, for three years to serve as an integration and testing site.

Following the contract award, Brent Ingraham, the U.S. Army assistant secretary for acquisition, logistics, and technology, led a delegation to visit Hanwha Aerospace’s production facilities in Changwon, South Korea, on August 26. The visit included an inspection of the K9 howitzer production line, where officials observed automated processes such as robotic welding. The delegation also reviewed other defense platforms, including the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher and Redback infantry fighting vehicle, as part of discussions to expand bilateral defense cooperation and support U.S. Army modernization.

If the prototypes successfully meet military requirements during the planned four years of operational testing, the program may lead to a large-scale production contract for up to 500 systems, potentially valued at approximately $7.14 billion.
