Happy Hens eggs linked to Salmonella outbreak in San Diego County

San Diego County health officials have linked a Salmonella outbreak to raw, unpasteurized eggs supplied by Happy Hens, a poultry farm located in Ramona, California. The investigation indicates the eggs were used to make mayonnaise for various deli items at Ramona Family Naturals Market.

As of August 17, 2026, the outbreak has grown to 21 confirmed and probable cases, with seven individuals hospitalized. This is an increase from the 13 cases and four hospitalizations reported when the cluster was first identified on July 28.

The market owner has reportedly stopped using raw, unpasteurized eggs in all deli products. San Diego County’s Department of Environmental Health and Quality is working with state agencies, including the California Department of Public Health, to investigate further. Officials have also contacted other retail food facilities that may have received eggs from Happy Hens to provide guidance on storage and safety.

Health officials noted that this specific Salmonella strain is not related to a separate outbreak involving shell eggs in the Midwest.
