Harare reports high HIV infection rates among youth aged 15-24

New data indicates that more than half of all new HIV infections in Zimbabwe's Harare Metropolitan Province are occurring among individuals aged 15 to 24. Of the approximately 2,644 new annual infections recorded in the province, 1,341 involve this youth demographic.

Harare currently has an HIV prevalence rate of 8.4%, with roughly 195,429 people living with the virus. Provincial officials noted that while overall cases of HIV and tuberculosis have declined, statistical analysis shows a concerning rise in infections among the 15-24 age group.

Dr. Shingirayi Mushamba emphasized the need for targeted interventions, stating, "We are very concerned because, despite an overall decline in HIV and tuberculosis cases, our statistical analysis reveals an increase in infections among the 15-24 year olds. It is our future that is at stake."

In response, the government plans to collaborate with schools, parents, local authorities, and the Ministry of Health and Child Care to strengthen education and awareness programs. Adonijah Muzondiona, the provincial director of the National AIDS Council (NAC), highlighted that adolescent girls and young women remain the most affected group.
