Youth HIV infection trends in Thailand

Overview

Thailand is experiencing a significant public health challenge as cumulative HIV cases have surpassed 557,000 in 2026. Although overall infections have seen a slight decrease over the last three years, annual new infections remain high at approximately 8,000 to 9,000, which exceeds the national target of fewer than 1,000 new cases per year.

Health officials have noted a demographic shift where individuals aged 15 to 24 account for nearly half of all new infections. The burden is also geographically concentrated, with 13 of the country’s 77 provinces reporting more than 10,000 cases each. In response, the government is working to expand access to preventative treatments like PrEP, despite ongoing challenges with social stigma and reaching at-risk groups.
