German public broadcasters announce major restructuring for 2027

German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF are preparing for a significant restructuring of their programming, set to take effect on January 1, 2027. As part of a new reform treaty, the existing special-interest channel ZDFneo will be converted into a joint venture called “neo von ARD und ZDF,” which will serve as the primary channel for young adults across both networks.

The reorganization will also impact information, documentation, and educational content. The channels “While One,” “tagesschau24,” and the educational channel “ARD-Alpha” are scheduled to be discontinued by the end of 2026. In their place, the broadcasters will focus on three shared linear brands: “neo von ARD und ZDF” for entertainment, a joint documentary channel to succeed ZDFinfo, and “Phönix,” which will continue as a central information and parliamentary reporting service under the leadership of WDR.
